Bullion, Numismatic Coins and Jewellery: Understanding Three Types of Precious-Metal Value

Oct 27, 2026

Gold, silver and platinum can take many forms. A Gold Maple Leaf, an older silver coin and an inherited gold ring may all contain precious materials, but they are not valued in exactly the same way.

At Canada Gold, we help people understand the precious-metal value in the items they bring to us. That includes bullion, gold and silver coins, jewellery and other items containing precious metals. In some cases, a coin may have value beyond its metal content because of rarity, condition, history or collector interest. When an item appears to have potential numismatic value, our team can draw on the expertise of our sister company, Canadian Coin & Currency, to help ensure it receives the right consideration.

Bullion: Value Based on Precious Metal Content

Bullion refers to precious metals – most commonly gold, silver and platinum -in formats such as coins, bars, ingots and wafers. These products are generally made for people who want to own physical precious metals.

A bullion item’s value is primarily determined by:

  • The type of metal it contains.
  • Its weight, usually measured in grams or troy ounces.
  • Its purity, often marked as .9999 for 99.99% pure gold or silver.
  • The current market value of the metal.

A one-ounce Gold Maple Leaf is a clear example. While it is instantly recognizable for its maple leaf design, it is generally purchased for its gold content, purity and established place in the bullion market. The Royal Canadian Mint describes bullion coins as tangible precious-metal assets made for investment, with values that are tied primarily to metal content and market demand.

Bullion can take many forms. Gold is available in full-ounce formats as well as smaller fractional sizes, which can make physical gold more accessible for people who prefer to begin with a smaller amount. Silver bullion is also available in coins, rounds and bars, making it a popular option for people beginning to explore precious metals.

Canada Gold is an authorized distributor of Royal Canadian Mint products. We offer recognized gold and silver bullion coins and bars from Canada and around the world, including Gold Maple Leaf and Silver Maple Leaf products. We also purchase gold and silver bullion, using weight, purity and current market conditions to determine an offer.

Coins: Precious Metal Value and Numismatic Potential

Coins can fall into more than one category. Some coins are best understood as bullion because their value is primarily tied to the precious metal they contain. Others may have additional value because they are collectible.

At Canada Gold, we look at coins first through the lens of their precious-metal content. Gold, silver and platinum coins can be assessed based on their metal type, purity, weight and current market value. This applies to many Canadian and international coins, including recognized bullion products and older coins containing gold or silver.

However, some coins may have potential value beyond their metal content. This is often called numismatic value. Numismatic coins can be influenced by factors such as:

  • Rarity and surviving quantity.
  • Year of issue or mint mark.
  • Condition and level of preservation.
  • Historical significance.
  • Design varieties or recognized minting errors.
  • Current collector interest.

An older silver dollar, for example, may have value because of the silver it contains. But if it is from a harder-to-find year, has a notable variety or is in exceptional condition, it may also be of interest to collectors. The same is true for certain gold coins, commemorative issues, paper currency and specialized collections.

It is important to remember that age alone does not make a coin rare or highly valuable. Many older coins are common, while some newer issues may have limited mintage or distinctive features that create collector interest.

When a coin or collection brought to Canada Gold appears to have potential numismatic value, we can consult an expert from our Canadian Coin & Currency team. This allows us to take a closer look at items that may deserve consideration beyond their precious-metal value, while keeping the Canada Gold experience focused on clear, professional evaluations.

Jewellery: More Than Its Gold Weight

Jewellery is often the most personal form of precious metal. A ring, necklace, bracelet or a pair of earrings may be made from valuable gold, silver or platinum, but it may also be connected to an engagement, anniversary, family member or milestone.

From a precious-metals perspective, jewellery is often evaluated based on:

  • Metal type and purity.
  • Weight.
  • Wear, damage and repair needs.
  • Diamonds, gemstones or pearls.
  • Craftsmanship, design and brand recognition.
  • Vintage, estate or resale appeal.

Not every piece of jewellery will have resale value beyond its metal content. Broken chains, single earrings, worn rings and unbranded pieces may be valued primarily for their gold, silver or platinum. However, some jewellery stands out because of its craftsmanship, materials, design, gemstones or condition.

Canada Gold evaluates jewellery in person and without obligation, helping people understand the factors behind an offer. Select pieces with strong craftsmanship, desirable design, good condition and resale appeal may also have the opportunity for a second life through 100 Ways, our sister company specializing in pre-loved fine jewellery.
