Struck in Innovation: How Modern Coins Blend Craft, Technology, and Precious Metal

Mar 3, 2026

The world of numismatics has entered a new era where coins serve as high-tech marvels of design. Understanding the craftsmanship behind these pieces is a core interest for our visitors at Canada Gold. Whether it is the storied precision of the Royal Canadian Mint or the experimental techniques of mints abroad, the industry is currently redefining what is possible with strike depth and detail. To help collectors explore these advancements, we provide access to a global range of specimens both in-person at our stores and through our sister company, Canadian Coin & Currency.

Blank planchets

From Refined Metal to Precision Planchet

Every coin begins with metallurgy. Precious metals like gold and silver must be refined to exacting purity standards, often reaching 99.99% fineness. Base metals, by contrast, are carefully alloyed to balance strength, cost, and wear resistance. Once the composition is finalized, the metal is rolled into uniform strips and fed into blanking presses that punch out discs – planchets – with tight tolerances.

These planchets undergo annealing, a controlled heating and cooling process that softens the metal and prepares it for striking. They are then burnished and cleaned to remove any surface imperfections. At this stage, even microscopic defects matter, as they would be permanently captured during striking. The result is a perfectly prepared canvas for the design to come.

Designing in the Digital Age

Coin design today sits at the intersection of traditional sculpture and advanced digital modeling. Artists may begin with hand-drawn sketches or physical models, but these are quickly translated into high-resolution 3D renderings using specialized software. This allows designers to experiment with depth, texture, and light in ways that were not previously possible.

Engraving has evolved alongside design. Modern dies are often created using CNC machining and laser engraving, capable of reproducing incredibly fine details – down to fractions of a millimetre. This precision enables features like micro-text, complex radial lines, and lifelike textures that enhance both aesthetics and security.

Striking: Where Metal Meets Design

The striking process is where engineering and artistry converge. Planchets are fed into coining presses where immense pressure – often measured in hundreds of tonnes – is applied to transfer the design from the dies onto the metal. The way a coin is struck can dramatically influence its final appearance.

Bullion coins are typically struck once at high speed for efficiency, while collector coins are treated very differently. Slower press cycles and multiple strikes allow the metal to fully flow into every recess of the die, producing sharper details and more refined surfaces. Variations in pressure, die polish, and strike count can create finishes ranging from mirror-like proofs to softly frosted matte textures.

Ultra High Relief: Pushing Physical Limits

Ultra high relief coins represent one of the most technically demanding advancements in modern minting. By dramatically increasing the height of the design above the coin’s surface, these pieces achieve a sculptural quality that feels closer to medallic art than traditional coinage.

Le $50 Heraldic Lion Coin is a strong example of this approach. Its raised design elements require multiple strikes and carefully calibrated pressure to ensure the metal fills the deepest parts of the die without causing stress fractures or loss of detail. The result is a coin with remarkable dimensionality, where light and shadow interact dynamically across the surface.

Selective Gold Plating: Contrast and Craftsmanship

Selective gold plating introduces a second layer of artistry by combining metals within a single design. Using precision masking techniques, specific areas of a finished coin are electroplated with gold, while the surrounding surfaces remain in their original metal.

This process requires exact control – not only to define clean boundaries between plated and unplated areas, but also to ensure the gold layer adheres evenly without obscuring fine details. The Gold-Plated Maple Leaves in Motion demonstrates how this technique can guide the viewer’s eye, emphasizing motion and focal points within an already intricate design.

Colourization: Coins as Canvas

Colour has opened up entirely new possibilities in coin design. Modern colourization techniques use highly controlled printing methods to apply pigments directly onto the coin’s surface, often in multiple layers. These applications are engineered for durability, ensuring the colour remains stable over time without detracting from the underlying metal.

Le Ukrainian Pysanka Silver Coin is a standout example. Inspired by traditional Ukrainian egg decoration, it combines vibrant colour with intricate engraved patterns, resulting in a piece that feels both culturally rich and technically sophisticated. The interplay between colour and relief highlights just how far minting technology has evolved.

Matterhorn 2kg Silver Coin

Large-Format Coins and Global Innovation

Innovation in minting isn’t limited to surface treatments – scale has become a defining feature of some of the most impressive modern issues. Larger coins present unique engineering challenges, particularly when combined with high relief, as the metal must flow evenly across a much broader area.

Le Matterhorn 2 Kilo Silver Coin from CIT Coin Invest exemplifies this trend. Using advanced technology, it achieves dramatic topography across a full kilogram of silver, capturing the rugged detail of the iconic mountain landscape. Pieces like this blur the line between coin and sculpture, demonstrating how global mints are redefining the possibilities of the medium.

A Global Push for Innovation

While the Royal Canadian Mint is widely recognized as a leader in minting technology, it operates within a highly innovative global landscape. Institutions such as the Perth Mint and Austrian Mint continue to experiment with new techniques, materials, and finishes.

From advanced relief technologies to embedded elements and complex multi-metal constructions, these mints are collectively expanding what a coin can be. The result is a rapidly evolving field where creativity and engineering go hand in hand.

Beyond Metal: A New Era of Minting

What defines modern coinage is not just the materials used, but how those materials are transformed. Techniques like ultra high relief, selective plating, and colourization are layered onto a foundation of precision engineering, resulting in pieces that are as much about storytelling as they are about intrinsic value.

Coins today occupy a unique space – part investment, part collectible, and part art object. As technology continues to advance, that boundary will only continue to expand.

As an authorized dealer of the Royal Canadian Mint, Canada Gold offers access to many of these limited-release collector coins. Through our sister company, Canadian Coin & Currency, customers can explore and acquire not only Canadian issues, but also a curated selection of innovative coins from leading mints around the world – all available through Canada Gold locations across Canada.
